Overview

Designed by the Singapore Tourism Board – in 1964, the Merlion is the emblem of Singapore. You’re sure to have seen images of this national icon, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. The symbol was built by local craftsman Lim Nang Seng and was unveiled on the 15th of September 1972 by then prime minister – Lee Kuan Yew.

Fishy Tale

The icon symbolises Singapore’s beginnings as a fishing village, back then known as ‘Temasek’. The head of the symbol represents Singapore’s original name ‘ Singapore’ or ‘lion city’. You can get a glimpse of this icon at the Merlion Park, spouting water from its mouth, standing at 8.6 metres and weighing 70 tonnes. Easy to get to from many of the hotels in Singapore, such as the renowned Pan Pacific Singapore, do make sure you add this spot to your itinerary!

Fun fact

Did you know that the Merlion statue faces east? In fact, this auspicious aspect was retained even after it was relocated in 2002 in the Merlion Park. The belief is that this direction brings prosperity.
