Few destinations within Thailand are as popular as its capital, Bangkok. Renowned for its shopping and nightlife, Bangkok is an interesting blend of historic and futuristic. Here one will find modern buildings jostling for attention with ancient temples; historic roads leading to more modern ones. The city offers quite a number of interesting attractions for tourists to visit. These include a variety of temples such as the Wat Arun and the Wat Pho. However, if there is one place that is considered a ‘must visit’ when in Bangkok, it is the Grand Palace.
Located at the centre of the city, the Grand Palace was built in 1782 by King Rama I and it served as the official royal residence from 1782 to 1925. The sprawling complex has undergone many changes since it was built as many subsequent monarchs added to and expanded it. The Grand Palace consists of several lawns, buildings, courtyards, halls, gardens and pavilions. As most of these structures were added at different times, it gives the complex a haphazard feel that is nevertheless quite charming. Although the king no longer lives here (the royal residence having been moved to the Chitralada Palace), one can still find a few royal offices here. The palace is also used as the venue for national functions and official ceremonies.
The palace complex can be divided into the Siwalai Gardens Quarter, the Inner Court, the Middle Court, the Outer Court and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and only a portion of it is open to the public. However, it is definitely worth visiting. The Grand Palace can be found in the Phra Nakhon District, close to the Chao Phraya River. Those planning on visiting the place should look to spend a few hours here.
