Like Venice, once upon a time in Bangkok, transport was mainly through Chap Phraya River. This was not only for the common man but even for royalty and so splendid vessels were built to suit the royal status. The 8 Royal Barges are currently on display at the Royal Barges Museum and these works of art are very rarely taken out. In fact there are only taken out for the most important of state ceremonies and if you do count the number of times they have made an appearance, it is merely 16.

Made from teak with intricate carvings of Thailand’s mythical creatures, the barges are decorated in gilded gold and glass. The largest one belongs to the King and is shaped like a swan and is called Suphannahongsa. Made in 1911 from a single teak tree it stretches a majestic 46 meters and requires 50 oarsmen in addition to 14 crew members.

The last addition to this collection was made in 1996 in commemoration of the golden jubilee of His Majesty King Bhumibol Ayulyadej taking over to the throne. The most visually awe inspiring barge is Anantanakharat. A seven headed Naga or cobra sprouts from below, towering over you and reminding you of the royal splendor. Along with these 3 Anekchatphuchong complete the royal barge collection while the other 4 are escort barges.

If the viewing of all these barges inspires you to step aboard one yourself then you should definitely do a Bangkok cruise tour. There are numerous establishments that offer Bangkok cruises. If luxury is what you want to experience then opting for something like the Anantara Cruises Thailand might be a choice that caters to all your desires.
