The origins of this tribe are based on many myths and legends on account of their long history in the nation. The general belief is that the descendants of the Veddas can be traced back to those who migrated to Sri Lanka with Prince Vijaya.
Hunter-Gatherers
The Veddhas are a prime example of a community that thrived on hunting and gathering. Given their nomadic lifestyles and use of simple tools, historians have classed this community as being a part of the Palaeolithic era.
Customs and Practices
The original Veddha communities fashioned their attire using dried fibre from fruits and husks. The community was a lively one and they had a lot of songs, dances and rituals which have been passed on down the generations. The community had also developed a language of their own and it is being preserved to date along with the customs of old!
