Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Phangan Island is one of the most popular backpacking destinations in South East Asia. First gaining popularity among tourists in the 1980s, the island is renowned for its party atmosphere and incredible views. So, if you’re gearing up for a visit, when exactly should you visit?
Why Visit Koh Phangan
One of the main reasons most tourists visit the island is for the Full Moon, Black Moon, and Half Moon Parties. These events take place on specific dates every year, so be sure to look those up prior to travelling aside. Aside from these parties, however, you can relax in a resort in Phangan – such as the Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas – any time of the year. There are 3 distinct seasons to be aware of though.
The Dry Season
The island’s dry season lasts from December to February and is generally the busiest time in terms of tourists. As such, make your bookings in advance to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience if you prefer to visit during this time.
The Hot Season
July to August is considered to be the hot month for Phangan. During this period, temperatures can soar quite high – as the name suggests – so bring some light clothing with you to stay comfortable.
The Rainy Season
Rain starts to be a frequent occurrence in Phangan starting in July but it reaches its peak during October and November. While the rains make certain areas of the island inaccessible, it also means it becomes way less crowded. It’s something to consider if you want a bit of peace and solitude during your vacation.
