Originally this colossal building was the former railway station in Orsay, which was built for the Universal Exhibition on July 14th 1900. The station also had an adjacent hotel and it took 2 years to build it in time for the World’s Fair. For around 30 years the station served as the southwestern railroad network in France. However during the year of 1939 the platforms in the station were too short for the modern trains. Therefore the station only served the suburbs of Paris. It was also used as a mailing centre during World War II. For a short period of time the station was used for Orsen Welles films. The hotel which was adjacent to the station was closed in 1973 and it was decided to convert the station into a museum. This relieved the excessive use of space facilities at the Louvre, Jeu de Paume and other sites where different paintings and sculptures were kept.
The Musee d’Orsay was opened to the public in 1986 and the exhibits from Louvre, Jeu de Paume were displayed here. This museum contains a fantastic collection of French art dating from 1848-1915, which includes objects d’art, architectural displays, paintings, furniture, photography, sculptures and movies. The Musee d’Orsay is known for its vast collection of impressionist exhibitions. Famous paintings by world renowned artists such as Monet, Renoir, Degas and Cezanne are displayed here. It also features realistic, post impressionistic works of art.
