Having inspired the local poet Ebenezer Elliott, Rivelin Valley is a quaint corner of Sheffield that has been untouched by the ever-changing hands of time. Remaining largely unaffected by the progress that has all but overhauled the familiar landscapes of Sheffield, the natural beauty and age old elements of this once bustling medieval hamlet are still found today tucked away within its lush environs.

Running along the banks of the River Rivelin in southern Yorkshire the Rivelin Valley is a forested valley which falls westward for 3.5 miles till the trail reaches Malin Bridge. Established in 1967 the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail is an engaging encounter with nature that takes hikers and walkers through an area laden with farmland and softer slopes along the shores of the almost mythical Rivelin.

Perfect for nature lovers in search of an idyllic getaway from the hectic streets of bustling cities the valley comes complete with over twenty picturesque ponds that serve as reminders of the numerous mills that were once operational near the river. Highlights on the trail include the Rivelin Corn Mill which was built as far back as 1600s and the dark and deep Wolf Wheel pond. Measuring nearly 4.6 meters in diameter and built in the 1700s, this shady pond is one of the most expansive wheels in the region. Frequented by buzzing dragonflies and gaping kingfishers the wheel also serves as one of 4 dams that support local fisher folk and wildlife.

Dating back to 1581, the Hind Wheel Mill is by far the most ancient mill in the valley and is also the home of the famed Round Pond. With trout infested waters for amateur fishermen the area also houses a picnic region and a large enclave inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife species.

Other points of interest include the Nether Cut Wheel close to the “S” shaped bend along trail and the Walkley Bank Tilt which is popular among fishing enthusiasts. Recently converted in to a captivating recreational area the surrounding region also boasts a car park and several benches in addition to large colonies of waterfowls. The Mousehole Forge is almost near the end of the trail while the final mill dubbed Grogham Wheel is almost at Rivelin’s merging point with Loxley River. Comprising of two waterwheels the locale also houses the largest waterwheel in the valley affectionately identified as “Groggy”.
