As a result of pollution and global warming today, ocean waters are sullied with plastic, remnants of oil spills, and so on. This has brought about great harm to the underwater ecosystem. The ocean is one of the major natural resources of the Maldives and therefore, the country invests heavily in protecting and conserving the oceans. For this reason, the resorts of the archipelago have come up with creative green initiatives to protect not just the sea, but the environment as well. Here are a few.

Coral Reef Planting

Many popular resorts like Amilla Maldives give back to the environment by preserving the local reefs. Naturally broken pieces of coral are secured onto a metal frame and placed underwater. These little broken fragments will then begin to grow and patch up the gaps in the reef.

Reducing Plastics

This is, indeed one of the best ways to help save the environment, wouldn’t you agree? Almost any Maldives 5 star resort plays a part in reducing plastics by using ceramic containers for bathroom amenities and reusable boxes for food. Most resorts also sell recycled tote bags made of plastics that would otherwise reach the ocean.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Yet another way of showing the environment some love, resort islands are heavily invested in reducing their carbon footprint through homegrown produce, which means reduced packaging and less harm to the atmosphere and surroundings.

Reducing Waste

Furthermore, the reduction of waste is also a major focus for resorts in the archipelago. Almost all resort islands invest in the desalinisation of seawater for drinking. Some even have their very own recycling centres where glass, plastics, paper, and food waste are put to good use.
