Planning a Visit
This site, so named due to its resemblance in form to an elephant (or “aliya” in the local Sinhalese language), is within easy reach of the Sigiriya rock fortress. Key Prehistoric Site
One of the reasons this site is famous is that it offers insights into the prehistoric period of Sri Lanka. Some have dated the evidence found here to go back close to 5,000 years which has made it well-known amongst local archaeologists; additionally, the site has also been linked with early iron production in the country.
Major Findings
When conducting archaeological excavations at the Aligala rock shelter, several findings were made that provided clues as to what life was like in days of old. Some of the items uncovered included human remains such as jaws and bones, the remains of plants and animals as well as grinding stones and stone tools.

This site is one of the many historical attractions in Sri Lanka in this part of the country.
